Car Preparation

The demands placed on a car whilst on track are more than normal road use so pre-event preparation is recommended to ensure a safe and enjoyable day. The following list of advice should make your track day run much smoother & safer whether it be a standard road car or specialist track car.

1)      Brakes. Arguably the most important part of any car, you will need to check that you have plenty of wear left in your brake pads, if you decide to replace your pads you will need to bed the pads in approx 100 miles road use. Brake discs should be well within the wear limits. Brake fluid looses its performance after a while, so most regular track users change the fluid regularly and some will fit braided lines instead of the standard rubber brake hoses, to ensure a constant peddle feel.

2)      Tyres. The second most important aspect of the car. Tyres need to have plenty of life in them, no cuts, bulges, or foreign objects as they will be subjected to increased wear rates on the track. It is false economy to think your tyres are nearly finished thinking that you can replace them after the track day & have a new set for the road. Tyres are the only contact your car has with the tarmac and make a big difference to the handling of your car. As you get more experienced you may start to alter tyre pressures, but as a general rule to get you started, all 4 tyres should be the same pressure and to the manufactures recommendation.

3)      Suspension. The condition of your suspension, steering, ball joints & bushes make all the difference to how your car will handle. For safety a car should be at least MOT standard to ensure you enjoy the track experience and not fight the car the whole day.

4)      Engine. Will be put under a greater strain than normal road use, so it is important to check the vitals an engine needs. Water or coolant level for the radiator. Cooling fan cuts in before the engine overheats. Oil level & colour of oil – your engine will be working hard, fresh oil will prolong engine life, bring some spare oil on the day, and keep level close to maximum.  Cam Belt or drive belts – again these should be changed at manufactures recommendations or earlier and be in good condition.

5)      General preparation. Anything not secure in the car is a potential weapon as you circulate on track. Take everything you can out of the car & when on track the spare wheel, jack and tools should be left in a pit garage or somewhere else secure. Please note Focused Events can not be held responsible for the security of your belongings on the day.

6)      Tool kit. Bring along some basic tools and gaffer tape to help you through the day.

7)      Drinking Water. On track you will use more fluid especially on a hot day. Keep yourself fresh by drinking lots of fluid during the day. All the circuits have a restaurant where food & drink is available.

8)      Fire extinguisher. Not a must have and all the circuits we use have trained fire marshalls and some extinguishers around, but its always wise to have your own handy. Most recommended is a in-car extinguisher that is fixed in the cabin of your car and couldn’t come loose in case of an accident.

9)      Fuel. Almost all circuits we visit have petrol on site, but it is fine to bring your own in jerry cans. Please note you need at least a ¼ of a tank at all times as running out on track will make you no friends with the rest of the track as we stop a session to recover a stranded car!!!!!!!!!
